What if you forget the ColdFusion Admin Password?

Imagine suppose you have forgotten the admin password and cannot log in to ColdFusion Administrator. Here is a solution for this, follow the below steps.

Make a backup copy of CF_HOME\lib\neo-security.xml file

In case of multi-server editions, the path is:
C:\JRun4\servers\cfusion\cfusion-ear\cfusion-war\WEB-INF\cfusion\lib\neo-security.xml
Open the neo-security.xml file in a text editor and change 'true' to 'false' for the admin.security.enabled variable tag. For example, search the file for "admin.security.enabled" and change the entry as follows:

<var name='admin.security.enabled'><boolean value='false'/></var>
Restart the ColdFusion application server.

You should now be able to bypass the login to the ColdFusion administrator. You can reset the password by choosing Security > Administrator.

Flex Builder 2 RemoteObject calls to ColdFusion 8 CFCs fail

Issue

You are unable to connect Adobe Flex Builder 2 RemoteObjects to Adobe ColdFusion 8 CFCs.

Reason

Flex Builder 2 projects containing RemoteObject calls to ColdFusion 8 fail to connect for the following reasons:

You have not entered the proper compiler arguments which point to your ColdFusion 8's services-config.xml and or your ColdFusion server's context root.
You have created your Flex Builder 2 project as a "ColdFusion Flash Remoting Service." This is not appropriate if you are connecting to ColdFusion 8 CFCs.
You are using ColdFusion 8's embedded web server (typically running from port 8500) and you are trying to run your Flex project from within Flex Builder.
You do not have your ColdFusion 8 CFCs located in your server's web root.

Solution

Create your Flex Builder 2 project

Create a "Basic" (e.g. XML or web service from PHP/JSP/ASP.NET) Flex project.
Change your project's Output folder to point to your web root (if using ColdFusion 8's embedded web server, use {cfusion8_root}/wwwroot/your_project_name).
Click Finish, right-click your project from the Navigator pane of Flex Builder 2, and then choose Properties.
In the Flex Compiler section, add the appropriate Additional Compiler Arguments. For example:

-services=C:\ColdFusion8\wwwroot\WEB-INF\flex\services-config.xml -context-root=/ -locale en_US.
Click OK

Ensure ColdFusion 8 CFCs are setup properly

If using ColdFusion 8's embedded web server, ensure you have you CFCs located somewhere beneath the {cfusion8_root}/wwwroot/ directory
If using an external web server, ensure you have your CFCs located somewhere beneath your web server's web root, for example IIS is typically C:/Inetpub/wwwroot/
Ensure the "source" attribute of your Flex Project's <mx:RemoteObject> is correct. If your CFC is located in /wwwroot/myCFC/someCFC.cfc, then your "source" entry would be "myCFC.someCFC".
Ensure your database serving the data to your CFC is started and the ColdFusion 8 DSN is configured properly within ColdFusion Administrator

Run your Flex Application from the web root

Compile your project, but instead of running it from Flex Builder 2, open a web browser and go to http://host_name/website_name/flex_app_name/flex_project_name.html.

Like many Consultants, I've worked at a wide variety of clients during my career. Some clients used cutting edge technology that met or exceeded their business needs, and the greatest challenge with those projects was either company politics or getting approval for the hardware needed for the applications. While tough, the technology was interesting and those are usually the most fun places to work.

Then there are clients that choose to limp along on some underpowered and inappropriate tool or deprecated programming language written many years earlier that miraculously works because of constant nursing and continuous patching by some tired and unappreciated developer. Those companies rarely understand the costs of moving to modern technology and it is a frustrating situation for any developer to deal with, but unfortunately this is experienced far too often in the business world.

An important decision when upgrading a legacy application or creating new software is to know which platforms need to be supported. Many companies have multiple operating systems, or there may be an initiative to move to a newer or different operating system in the near future. To handle this situation, many companies are moving towards internet or intranet applications. As long as a browser is available to display the software, the operating system is not the limiting factor as was often the case in the past.

There are a number of good internet/intranet packages, including DreamWeaver, but e-commerce and reference projects need access to a lot of data that is stored in a relational database, so there is a need for a package to tie the front end web interface with the backend relational database, and that is where ColdFusion comes in. ColdFusion has been around a fairly long time and is well known to many internet developers. Let's take a look at the latest version of this Adobe product.

Configuration Considerations

There are several ways to setup a ColdFusion environment. The first is everything – web server, database engine and ColdFusion on a single server – is simple, takes the least hardware, but performance can be an issue as each part of the environment needs adequate resources (memory, drive space, CPU) to perform reasonably.

The second configuration consists of dedicated servers for each element – web server, database engine and ColdFusion on separate servers – is more expensive but offers benefits over the first configuration. This option provides dedicated hardware for each element and that should provide much better performance than the first option.

The third configuration consists of two elements – web server, database engine and ColdFusion on one server and the third element on a second server – is a compromise between the first and second options and it. This consolidation offers better performance than option one, yet it reduces the hardware expense incurred for option two.

While all three configurations were doable, the first configuration seems best for developing and testing ColdFusion, but I would recommend the second option for production environments. The third option would only be when hardware costs were a huge factor in the decision process.

Getting Started

ColdFusion 8 works with a number of operation systems:
1. Windows – W2000 Professional with SP3, W2000 Server/Advanced Server/Datacenter Server with SP3, W2003 Server Web/Standard/Enterprise with SP1, XP Home/Profession, and Vista. Pentium II or AMD Athlon processor.
2. Mac OS X 10.4.x on a system with a G4/G5/Intel processor
3. Linux – SUSE Enterprise Server 9/10, Red Hat AS/ES 3.0/4.0/5.0
4. Solaris 9/10 on system with a SPARC processor
5. AIX 5L/5.2/5.3 on RS/6000 with a POWER3 processor

Note: All supported operating systems require a minimum of 512 MB RAM (1 GB recommended), 500 MB hard drive space, and a DVD-ROM.

Supported databases include:

1. MS Access
2. SQL Server
3. MySQL
4. PostgreSQL
5. Apache Derby
6. DB2
7. Informix
8. Oracle
9. Sybase

I installed the software from a disk, instead of downloading the file and ran it on a Toshiba laptop running Windows Vista with SP 1 installed, a 1.9GB dual-core CPU, 2 GB RAM, a 120 GB hard drive, and a DVD-ROM.

The installation process was simple and error-free. A directory was created under C:\ColdFusion8, taking around 595 MB of storage space on my hard drive. I'd like to note that I downloaded the 8.0.1 update at the end of my tests and that file was 130 MB and it took up 174 MB during the installation - there were no problems during or after the update.

Using the Product

To use ColdFusion, create a website with DreamWeaver or another web development package. Next, if one does not already exist, setup a relational database like Oracle, Sybase or SQL Server. The final step is to connect ColdFusion to the new/existing database, and then create the ColdFusion pages and put them on server (use FTP when the ColdFusion and development systems are not the same). Yes, it really is that simple.
And you use a browser like FireFox to access the ColdFusion Administrator to setup or monitor the server.

Note: I used ColdFusion's standalone web server for testing, instead of a dedicated web server. This product lets one person create, link and maintain all aspects of a site, or allows dedicated people to handle their parts of the environment. As a developer and an Admin, I like this degree of flexibility.

I had no configuration issues with ColdFusion, and found integrating it to a web frontend and relational database backend fairly simple but it did take a little time. The documentation and online web help sources answered my questions – I never needed to contact Tech Support, which is a huge plus in my eyes. I have used the earlier versions of the product, which may have helped me understand how to use it, but I think people already experienced with internet development will find it just as easy to use.

New Product Features

Version 7.2 was the previous version and the updates in version 8.0 include:

Argument collections Array and structure creation improvements  Expanded platform, OS, and database support

The new features I personally liked best were the PDF and .NET support, the multi-threading (with the push for multi-core CPUs in servers, this seems like a must), and the improved reporting enhancements. The JavaScript operators in CFML were also nice and needed, but I know little about Flex so I don't know how that integration will help users.

Conclusion

Companies choose ColdFusion to create complex and robust mission-critical applications for internal and external access. While there are a number of ways to integrate web content with relational data, it is a simple task with ColdFusion, and the support for modern technology (Ajax, .NET and Java) is a valid reason to consider using this product.

I have worked with version 7 of ColdFusion, but can't attest to performance comparisons between older and the new release since I don't have those versions and a server environment setup for performance testing. Positives

So many positives. The application administration interface is simple and intuitive – it should be no problem for anyone with experience administering a web site or application. And I like the new server monitor, which is an impressive Flash application that is as well organized as any administration interface I've used over the years. Anyone with a UNIX admin background will appreciate the ability to take a snapshot of the server on demand. That server snapshot information is saved as a file and can be read from a browser, and it is thorough.

The ColdFusion Markup Language (CFML) is useful, but supporting existing Ajax applications is more important in these Web 2.0 times. I really like the inclusion of support for Exchange and .NET integration, as there are so many companies that have mixed Microsoft/non-Microsoft environments.

I believe the ability to dynamically generate PDFs is indispensible. Anyone that ever had to handle source and version control for documents at any company will be pleased that they can keep just one version of each document and let ColdFusion create PDFs as needed. Very nice.

I almost forgot to mention the Eclipse plug-in for CFML. Eclipse is one of my favorite IDEs and I use it for C/C++ and Java development projects as well as Java. While you can use a text editor to create ColdFusion pages, I'd rather use a familiar IDE like Eclipse. To download the plug-in, go to http://www.cfeclipse.org/download.cfm.

While I'm not a big Exchange guy, integrating to that product makes sense. There are CFML tags to handle calendaring and contacts and tasks – very nice features.

Negatives

None I could see. While the price seems steep, even small companies shouldn't have an issue with the price when considering the tools and functionality that the product offers.

I did not try to run a load test on my laptop. If your company wants to know how it performs, I'd suggest first creating a test website and test database, and then download an evaluation copy of the software.

I also think that some will balk at hiring dedicated ColdFusion developers, but believe it is reasonable to find existing DreamWeaver developers (perhaps internal resources as well as external candidates) that are capable of creating the web content, the office DBA can help with the database access issues, and a network administrator can help place the content on a server and monitor how well it works.

Recommendation

This is a good product for companies already using older versions of ColdFusion, or companies looking to move older legacy systems to a newer, more robust solution that easily integrates the application and relational database data. The interface is intuitive, just like Adobe's other products, and I did not encounter any errors during my tests. I have used other Adobe products to create and support web applications, but like that ColdFusion lets me build applications – not just linked HTML pages – for use on the internet. I would encourage anyone that is interested in ColdFusion to take advantage and download an evaluation copy of the product and take it for a test drive. While the cost of the software – especially the Enterprise Edition – is more than most people will spend, Adobe offers a free developer edition for Consultants that want to expand their repertoire of internet application development tools. In CF8, a new function was added, IsUserInAnyRole()

Description: Determines whether the logged in user belongs to any Role.

Returns: True, if the logged in user, belongs to any Role; False, otherwise.

Syntax:

IsUserInAnyRole(param1, param2, param3...)

Usage:
The function "isUserInAnyRole" takes a comma separated list as input. This can be a single parameter also.
The result will be an OR function on the list of roles. The role names are not case-sensitive.

To check if a user is in multiple roles, specify them in a comma-delimited list, such as "admin,user1,user2"

Examples

A simple definition to "what is flex" would be: Flex is a way to make/create SWF files!

Flex is a way to create SWF files that run in Adobe Flash Player. It is a development paradigm that compiles to SWF. It really is that simple but often we make the definition much harder. Just like Flash can create SWF files, so can Flex, but the way you develop is completely different.

Flex is built for developers and not for animators; it has been written for software developers and the paradigm matches the development methodology you already know. If you know Java, C, C++, C#, Delphi, VB, PHP, ColdFusion, Python, Ruby, you can learn Flex with little effort. The goal when Flex was created was to make a development paradigm that developers could learn easily matching the methodology they already know yet create SWF files for Flash Player (and now AIR). Flex has classes, components, a compiler, a debugger, class libraries, and uses XML (MXML) for declarative markup of components. The ActionScript programming language is based on ECMAScript 4 (the language standard behind JavaScript) and has full support for the ECMA XML scripting standard E4X. It also has most of the UI components that you already use ( like button, list, datagrid, combobox, and tree) but it also supports containers like HBox, VBox, TabNavigator, TitleWindow and many others. If you have written software before you can learn Flex easily. Better still is that Flex is compatible with all HTTP servers, version control systems, and any server side programming language, so the knowledge you have of servlets, php, ASP.net, or JSP is really handy. Flex just lets you program the client side in a paradigm you already know and understand.

Flex is built for making applications... rich client side application behavior. It has not been built for making web pages, banner ads, or server side logic it has been built for creating client-side applications that run over the Internet talking to remote servers. Flex has been used to make some really great apps like Buzzword (Document Editor like Microsoft Word but in the web), Picnik (Photo Editor/Manager for touching up your best snapshots), Oracle Sales Prospector (An enterprise ERP application.) The real key is that these examples provide an application experience just like desktop software that run on the web (Adobe Flash Player) and on the desktop (Adobe AIR)

In summary, Flex is a development paradigm that allows you to write software for the web and desktop that many people can use compatibly today. It leverages the tools, servers, and development models that you already know and allows you to write the next generation of software compatibly.

Another definition would be: A development platform that is revolutionizing how the world writes and deploys software!

Switching web server on ColdFusion

In case there is a need to switch from an external web server to the built-in ColdFusion web server, you can acheive this without reinstalling.

Switch from an external web server to the built-in web server

Back up the jrun.xml file.
This file is in the cf_root\runtime\servers\default\SERVER-INF directory in Windows, and in the cf_root/runtime/servers/default/SERVER-INF directory in UNIX.
Open the original jrun.xml file for editing.

Locate the WebService service and set the deactivated attribute to false:

If you switch from the built-in web server to an external web server, you must copy the contents of the cf_root/wwwroot directory to your web server root. If you are using Adobe Dreamweaver, ensure that you reconfigure any sites that you move from one server to another.
Restart ColdFusion.

CFDocument Cumulative Hot Fix for CF8

The following ColdFusion 8 issues for CFDocument have been resolved:

70239 - CFDocument in ColdFusion 8 was producing documents that were smaller than same document produced in ColdFusion MX 7.

70388 - Using multiple cfdocumentitems in a document caused the error, "routines cannot be declared more than once."
70403 - StackOverFlow errors occurred when a large document is created. A simple report with over 1500 lines has caused this problem. More complex, but shorter documents have also resulted in this error.

“It clearly reflects how the ColdFusion team continues to listen to customers,” Lynch continued. “This release will enable hundreds of thousands of ColdFusion developers to solve real-world web application challenges more quickly and with even more engaging, effective user interfaces.”

For nearly all of its development cycle, ColdFusion 8 was part of the former Enterprise and Developer BU, which was recently merged with the Knowledge Worker BU to form the Productivity BU, led by Mendels. With the reorganization, ColdFusion is now part of the Platform BU headed by Lynch.

What Is ColdFusion 8?

ColdFusion 8 enables developers to quickly and easily create compelling websites and other Internet applications that can be smoothly integrated in virtually any enterprise environment. The version is the fastest ever, even when running applications built with a previous version. It is loaded with new and enhanced features based on extensive, ongoing customer feedback.

Building on a Successful Beta

Focused efforts to market the ColdFusion 8 release began months ago. The product’s public beta, announced on May 30, was extensively marketed by targeted email, blogs and on appropriate websites. Ben Forta and Adam Lehman, ColdFusion specialist, visited 41 cities in four weeks to meet with ColdFusion developer groups. They, along with Tim Buntel and Jason Delmore, also presented at dozens of events, demonstrating key features and benefits of the beta release.

“We targeted meeting with 2,000 developers and ended up meeting with more than 3,000,” said Forta. “Many of them can’t wait to get their hands on the product, and survey results indicate that the vast majority of attendees plan on upgrading and deploying the new ColdFusion immediately.”

As a result of the tour and other marketing efforts, 14,000 developers took part in the public beta – nearly three times the target of 5,000 set by the ColdFusion 8 team. “ColdFusion 8 has so many great features, and we’re already seeing developers create innovative applications that display the power and versatility of this release,” said Jason Delmore, senior product manager.

Spreading the Word

Now ColdFusion 8’s marketing team is building on the momentum created during the public beta by aggressively promoting the launch, with an emphasis on the product’s existing base of customers and government as a key vertical. According to Andrea Woolner, senior marketing manager, tactics in the campaign include:

Behind the Scenes – Developing ColdFusion 8

ColdFusion 8 was developed by Adobe employees in Newton, Massachusetts, and Bangalore, India. “We had about 30 team members in Bangalore and 10 in the U.S.,” said Damon Cooper, director of engineering. “It was a bit of a challenge with the time difference, but we made it work. We had an outstanding team.”

Cooper said the research phase of development started in September 2005 and lasted about 18 weeks. Everyone on the engineering team – both in development and quality engineering – split into subgroups with about five or six team members. Each subgroup focused on a specific area related to the next release; for example, competitive products or the server environment in the enterprise.

After researching their respective areas, the subgroups reported back to the ColdFusion 8 team as a whole and communicated their findings and recommendations. “Everyone was involved,” explained Cooper. “As a result, I think everyone became a passionate champion for certain new features and enhancements.”

Integration with Other Adobe Products

After Adobe’s acquisition of Macromedia, which took place a few months into the development cycle, a big focus for the product and development teams became making sure that ColdFusion 8 leveraged other Adobe products.

“We had some great opportunities to leverage other Adobe technologies to enhance the power of ColdFusion, including PDF, Acrobat Presenter and LiveCycle Data Services,” said Delmore. “We wanted to make sure that ColdFusion 8 took advantage of everything Adobe had to offer, and demonstrate Adobe’s commitment to the product.”

Synch Dev

Once the ColdFusion 8 team decided on a feature set and built early prototypes, they began meeting with customers through the Synchronous Development (Synch Dev) process. Synch Dev is a customer-driven development process that requires engaging with users early and often. It was broadly used at Macromedia and usually involves five waves of customer visits, totaling about 30 half-days.

“As we went through Synch Dev, we ended up refining and refining and refining to the point that we felt very good about our feature list and the future of the product,” said Cooper.

After each Synch Dev wave of customer product validation visits, the product pitch and prototypes were modified to take customers’ feedback into account, before the next wave of customer visits began,” recalled Cooper.

Once the picture of the final product and the must-have features became clear, the engineering team began feature-design and development work. The development process was broken into “Dev Blocks” averaging about 12-15 weeks each in duration. As each Dev Block was completed, the entire engineering team went into a two week closedown period – for example, just prior to the Alpha 1 release, the Alpha 2 release, the Beta 1 release, the full public beta (internal release candidate), and the GMC/final releases.

“At each stage, we invited customers to participate. We didn't want to miss anything major,” said Cooper.

All Hands on Deck

Prior to the public beta and every milestone release, the ColdFusion 8 team had a close-down period that required “all hands on deck,” recalled Cooper. “For two weeks, every development engineer, every quality engineer, put their feature development pencils down and focused solely on making sure all aspects of the product were the absolute best they could be.”

“Everyone on the team understands that quality is a feature and probably the most important feature that we ship,” Cooper continued. “Knowing how many customers rely on our technology, we all wanted to get it right.”

Early Feedback

Early feedback from beta customers and developers at conferences indicates that the team has, indeed, got it right.

“Members of our team recently attended the CFUnited Conference, and after breakout session on Ajax, they were mobbed,” recalled Cooper. “Many of the 600 developers who attended those sessions, as well as others at the conference, wanted to know how ColdFusion 8 was built, how we did it. Some of our guys felt like rock stars.”

Delmore added, “As we went through the Synch Dev process, customer feedback went from great to ecstatic. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that this launch will be something big. This release could have a huge impact.”

“I agree,” said Cooper. “I think the ColdFusion 8 team has done something pretty extraordinary here.”

Adobe Systems is set to release a new version of its ColdFusion software development environment today (July 30). ColdFusion 8 provides an expanded set of tools and technologies aimed at developers building dynamic Web sites and rich Internet applications (RIAs).

ColdFusion 8 (code named "Scorpio") is the first release of the 12-year-old solution as an Adobe product, and there's a lot of interest in it among the installed customer base. Adobe acquired the technology when it purchased Macromedia in 2005. The public beta of the product has been available on the Adobe Labs Web site for several months, and the San Jose, Calif.-based company is reporting more than 14,000 downloads since May.

"This release is about Adobe's DNA being injected into a tested and proven way of building Web apps," said Tim Bruntel, senior product marketing manager for ColdFusion. "Traditionally, people relied on ColdFusion to build applications with static HTML front ends. In version 8, we've introduced the idea of a richer user experience of the content created by a ColdFusion application."

ColdFusion combines an application server with a rapid application development environment designed to integrate databases and Web pages. It employs its own scripting language, the ColdFusion Markup Language (CFML), which is similar to JavaServer Pages, C#, and PHP, and uses tag-based syntax like HTML.

This release introduces a slew of new features to the product, but the loudest buzz is being generated by its .NET integration. As a Java-based solution, ColdFusion has long allowed developers to invoke Java objects natively; the new version adds the ability to invoke .NET objects natively.

ColdFusion 8 includes a new Server Monitor feature, which lets developers identify bottlenecks and tune the server for better performance. It supports seamless integration of ColdFusion apps with other Adobe technologies, such as Flex, PDF, Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR) and Adobe LiveCycle. Also, this release uses AJAX-based components to allow developers to design and deploy applications by integrating complex environments into intuitive interfaces.

This release also provides expanded support for the leading Java EE application servers, including IBM WebSphere, BEA WebLogic and JBoss.

"ColdFusion is a classic example of a niche tool," observed Gartner analyst Mark Driver. "The existing market is very entrenched, and it plateaued several years ago. But there's a lot of code written in ColdFusion (CFML), and companies don't have a good reason to rewrite it. Plus, many organizations have a lot of ColdFusion skills in-house, and they don't want to retrain their people."

Driver expects the new release to generate a spike in ColdFusion licensing revenue from existing customers, but he doubts that new users will flock to the solution.

"I haven't talked with anyone thinking about trying ColdFusion for the first time in the past three years," he said.

Nevertheless, he feels that ColdFusion will continue to be a solid offering, especially in Java shops that need to write quick and dirty applications.

"ColdFusion is a perfect way to augment the Java skills of a certain class of developers," he said. "It's not necessarily going to be the principle development platform moving forward, but it's a great tool to have in the tool chest."

Looking into the product's future, Driver has a suggestion for Adobe: open source it.

"No one has told me that there are any plans to do it, but I wouldn't be shocked if, in the next year or so, we see Adobe open source a significant portion of ColdFusion," he said. "It worked well with Flash, and I think it would be a good move for the company to get the proprietary stench off the product, to compete more strongly with technologies like PHP and Ruby on Rails. That would be my recommendation to Adobe; it could flush the entrenched leaders out of their comfortable market niches by changing the dynamics of the game."

ColdFusion 8 is available now in two commercial editions. ColdFusion 8 Enterprise Edition is a high-performance solution for delivering multiple Web sites and applications on one or more servers or on existing Java EE application server installations. The other commercial edition is ColdFusion 8 Standard, an easy-to-manage configuration for single applications, aimed at small-to-medium-size businesses. There's also a free Developer Edition, which is a full-featured server for development use only.

3. Round Up of Adobe Announcements Last Week

Adobe made a bunch of announcements yesterday that I couldn't do justice because I was at OSCON. A lot of them are from Kevin Lynch's keynote speech at the Ajax Experience but we also had a couple of others. Ajaxian had a great writeup of Kevin's keynote that is well worth checking out.

Video in Ajax and the new Ajax Dev Center

Adobe is really embracing Ajax and is doing a lot to help that community. Kevin announced the availability of the Flash Ajax Video Component (FAVideo) which is now on labs and is an open source component that you can drop into an Ajax application to add Flash video. What's great is that the component makes all of the controls and design side available so that you can customize the look and feel of the player using only HTML and JavaScript. Essentially you don't need to know anything about Flash to give your site a branded video experience. We've also created an Ajax Developer center that provides a lot of resources for Ajax developers who want to work with Adobe technologies. I think it's going to be a great bridge between the Flash world and the Ajax world.

Standardization of crossdomain.xml

Also at the Ajax Experience we announced that we're going to try and make our cross-domain policy files a standard. Flash uses these files to check whether or not the player is allowed to access the content on the server. It gives the people hosting data the ability to make certain contents off limit. With the swell of mashups and more and more data being made available, we wanted to step up and provide our solution. More can be found on the cross-domain file here.

The SWF and FLV File Format Specification Available

We also released the spec for version 9 of SWF and FLV last week. People have been wanting this for a while and in the blog post Emmy promised that we're going to try hard to make the next version available much closer to the player release. Hopefully we'll see more external support for creating Flash 9 content now that this has been released.

ColdFusion 8 Released

Today we announced that ColdFusion 8 is available. It's been a lot of fun watching this product evolve this year. I came from a ColdFusion background and I think 8 is a great release. We've put in a lot of support for Ajax in this release and also support for closer integration to Flex. I think it's a big jump in functionality and I hope it's well received by the web developer community.

ColdFusion is a server technology for building Internet applications. AIR, which is Adobe's planned software for deploying Internet applications on the desktop, can use ColdFusion as a server component. AIR applications can connect to ColdFusion for enterprise data and services, said Tim Buntel, Adobe senior product marketing manager for ColdFusion. AIR had been known as Apollo and is only available in a beta form at this point; general availability is expected later this year.

Although ColdFusion 7.0.2, released last year, could offer basic data exchange with AIR, version 8 improves data synchronization and performance significantly, according Adobe. Future versions of ColdFusion could expand connectivity to AIR, Buntel said. For example, development tools could be built for this purpose.

Also highlighted in version 8 of ColdFusion is multithreaded support within the ColdFusion language. "It allows developers to run individual parts of their application in separate threads in the application server, so the processing of your application can efficiently use the resources of the server," Buntel said.

Another feature is a Server Monitor capability, which is a rich Internet application that gauges metrics like memory usage and page response times.

Adobe received far greater response than expected to the public beta program launched in late-May. Anticipating that 5,000 developers would download the product, Adobe instead had nearly 14,000 downloads, Buntel said.

A beta user cited the product's speed compared to previous versions. "I've seen, depending on what we're doing, at least two times faster [response times] and in many cases [it has been] up to four or five times faster," said Terry Ryan, IT director at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

The school's student portal application is being written entirely in ColdFusion 8, Ryan said. ColdFusion 8's Server Monitor, meanwhile, has saved the school from having to write its own monitoring tools, he said.

ColdFusion competitors most commonly are PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor), ASP.Net, and Ruby on Rails, Buntel said. But these technologies have a more limited reach than ColdFusion, he said.

"Their emphasis is primarily on traditional Web-based applications and being part of Adobe, we're going beyond just HTML," with capabilities for PDF, Flex, and Air as well as connectivity across Java and .Net, Buntel said.

Adobe has released its ColdFusion 8 development tool for building dynamic Web sites and rich Internet applications.

The new release is designed to increase developer productivity by integrating with complex enterprise environments and identifying bottlenecks to tune the server for better performance. Improved server-monitoring capabilities allow ColdFusion 8 to provide granular reports on which requests are taking the longest and which objects within a page are performing poorly.

Built with the help of over 14,000 public beta program developers, ColdFusion 8 uses Ajax-based components, enabling users to design and deploy engaging applications with more intuitive interfaces. This release offers expanded .Net integration, along with better Windows Vista and JBoss support, to provide enhanced efficiency, interoperability between disparate systems, and scalability.

The new version, which is available in two editions, enables developers to integrate their ColdFusion applications with other Adobe technologies, including Adobe Flex, PDF, Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR) and Adobe LiveCycle.

ColdFusion 8 Enterprise Edition is designed for delivering multiple websites and applications on one or more servers, and costs £3,706 (US$7,644) per two CPUs.

ColdFusion 8 Standard Edition is designed for single applications at the small- to medium-sized business level and costs £642 (US$1,324) per two CPUs.

There is also a free, full-featured Developer Edition for development use only.

Adobe has released the latest version of its ColdFusion tool for building dynamic websites and internet applications.

The company says the focus of Coldfusion 8 has been to increase developer productivity and to make the software integrate with complex enterprise environments.

Adobe also confirmed that over 14,000 developers have taken part in the ColdFusion public beta test, which launched in May.

There's a variety of new features, including ColdFusion 8 Server Monitor which lets developers swiftly identify bottlenecks and tune the server for better performance.

The software integrates with other Adobe technologies, including Flex, PDF, and more. It uses Ajax-based components, enabling developers to design and deploy engaging applications by integrating complex environments into intuitive interfaces.

While still not available for Mac OS X, ColdFusion 8 offers expanded support for .NET, Windows Vista and JBoss alongside integration with the latest version of enterprise databases.

ColdFusion 8 is available in two editions: ColdFusion 8 Enterprise Edition costs £3,706 per two computers and is a high-performance solution for delivering multiple websites and applications on one or more servers, or on existing J2EE application server installations. ColdFusion 8 Standard costs £641.95 and is for single applications.

ColdFusion may also be used for development at no cost with the free Developer Edition.
